Over exfoliated? Here’s the recovery routine.

Tight, flaky, shiny, stinging — when every product suddenly feels wrong, your skin isn’t broken. It’s over worked. Here’s the minimalist reset that helps it look calm again.

A cushioned dab of protective cream on skin

It usually announces itself in the shower: your face feels tight. Then the flaking starts along the smile lines, your cheeks look shiny in a way that is not glow, and the serums you have used for years suddenly sting. If this is you, you are likely dealing with over exfoliated skin — one of the most common outcomes of a high performing, active heavy routine.

What actually happened

Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, peels, scrubs, acids layered on acids — each one is useful, but stacked too close together they take more from the skin’s surface than it can replace. The result is a moisture barrier that looks and feels overwhelmed: dryness and oiliness at the same time, rough texture, visible redness, and that unmistakable feeling that your skin is angry at every product in your cabinet.

The instinct is to fix it with another product that does more. The answer is almost always a routine that does less.

The 28 day recovery routine

1. Pause the attack

Take a clean break from exfoliating acids, retinoids, scrubs, and clay masks. Not forever — just long enough for skin to stop looking reactive. Keep cleansing gentle and lukewarm.

2. Replenish at night

On clean skin, press in 2–3 drops of a concentrated recovery oil. Oxygen activated plant lipids — squalane, jojoba, ozonated olive oil — are ideal here: rich enough to drench depleted skin, light enough to absorb without a film.

3. Protect day and night

Seal everything with a protective cream built on barrier staples — niacinamide, panthenol, allantoin, hyaluronate — and nothing your skin has to fight: no fragrance, no essential oils, no surprise actives. SPF every morning; sun is the one non negotiable.

4. Reintroduce slowly

Once skin looks calm again — typically two to four weeks — bring actives back one at a time, one or two nights a week, keeping recovery nights in the rotation permanently. That alternation is the entire logic behind skin cycling, and it is why skin that recovers well tends to stay looking calm.

What to expect week by week

Individual results vary — but the pattern is remarkably consistent: skin that is given a real recovery phase looks calmer than skin that is endlessly corrected.
